Fresno State Installs New AstroTurf USDA Biopreferred Field

FRESNO, Calif. | AstroTurf.com | August 28th, 2025 — In a bold move that reinforces its commitment to environmental stewardship and athletic excellence, AstroTurf®, a pioneer in synthetic turf innovation, today announced the installation of a USDA BioPreferred®-certified field at Fresno State’s Valley Children’s Stadium. This next-generation playing surface not only marks a milestone in sustainability but also exemplifies the deep-rooted partnership between AstroTurf and Fresno State Athletics.

The new field features AstroTurf’s RootZone® 3D3 Blend GT-B system, the first synthetic turf product in the industry to earn the USDA Certified Biobased Product label. This designation signifies a high percentage of renewable, plant-based materials without compromising durability or performance. Verified through the USDA BioPreferred® Program, the system represents a greener, safer alternative to traditional petroleum-based turf surfaces.

Adding to the innovation, the field utilizes BioBased TPE Infill by Guardian, a more environmentally responsible infill. Made from renewable materials, Guardian’s BioBased TPE not only enhances sustainability but also plays a critical role in reducing on-field surface temperatures, improving athlete comfort, and safety.

“This new turf reflects where we’re headed — not just as a football program, but as a department committed to excellence, innovation, and progress,” said Fresno State Director of Athletics Garrett Klassy.

The longstanding collaboration between AstroTurf and Fresno State continues to grow with this installation. Previously, the Bulldogs selected AstroTurf’s popular RootZone® 3D3 system for Jim Sweeney Field, citing its superior shock absorption, reduced heat retention, and resilience — key advantages in the hot Fresno Valley climate. Over time, the relationship has strengthened, built on shared values of innovation, sustainability, and community.

“With a USDA BioPreferred-certified system, our customers get more than a playing surface — they get a meaningful step forward in meeting their sustainability goals without compromising performance,” said Dominick Berarducci, VP of Sales, AstroTurf NW Region. “The addition of Guardian’s BioBased TPE infill further advances this mission, delivering a cooler, safer surface that reflects Fresno State’s commitment to both performance and the planet.”
