San Jose State’s New Softball Field is Latest in Partnership with AstroTurf

SAN JOSE, Calif. — The San José State University Spartans softball team spent almost two years playing their home games away from home. Now, the softball team is back on campus and at home with the May 2018 opening of the Spartan Softball Field, which features a synthetic turf field by AstroTurf, the inventor of artificial turf and a well-known innovator in the industry.

The Spartan Softball Field represents a continuation of San José State’s partnership with AstroTurf. This is the second playing surface AstroTurf has completed at the Mountain West conference member school. The first was inside the 30,456-seat CEFCU Football Stadium.

Both fields were designed by California’s Sports Surfacing Design firm, Verde Design and AstroTurf partner/distributor Valley Precision Grading installed the surface.

As the softball team moves into the future, players will field balls and lace base hits on a synthetic field that plays like the real thing.

All of the outfield, the warning track and foul territory are covered in the RootZone Diamond Blend artificial grass. Decades of research and development, coupled with guidance from elite coaches and baseball lifers, have lifted the Diamond Series to the top of the market in college baseball and softball turfs. Each component of the field is specifically engineered to replicate the look, feel, and performance of a natural surface, including realistic ball bounce and accurate sliding distances. In other words, it plays like grass where it’s supposed to and like clay where it should.
