AstroTurf Partners with Cyclyx Consortium to Elevate Environmental Leadership

AstroTurf, the industry pioneer in synthetic turf systems and a top-tier ESG brand, is excited to announce its latest partnership with Cyclyx International. Cyclyx is a consortium-based, post-use plastic innovation company committed to increasing the recyclability of plastic waste from 10% to 90%.

As AstroTurf approaches its 60th anniversary in 2025, the company reflects on its heritage, which began with providing the revolutionary synthetic playing surface for the Houston Astrodome. Known as an architectural marvel and once dubbed the Eighth Wonder of the World, the Astrodome required an equally innovative surface that could withstand conditions without sunlight. AstroTurf met this challenge with a technologically superior synthetic material, setting new standards for Major League Baseball and, by extension, environmental responsibility.

With an unwavering dedication to product quality and athlete performance, AstroTurf has equally committed itself to sustainable development. The company aims to achieve zero waste by early 2024, continually employing inventive strategies to address and minimize plastic waste. AstroTurf is proud to offer a “climate positive” turf product made from Bio-Based PE (Bio Polyethylene), which incorporates 60% renewably sourced raw materials such as sustainably farmed sugar cane, thereby reducing both carbon footprint and water usage.

“We are thrilled to be joining forces with Cyclyx as part of their esteemed consortium,” says Rob Mitchell, AstroTurf Vice President of Business Development. “Our robust commitment to ESG goals finds an ideal match in Cyclyx’s resources, expert guidance, and wealth of opportunities. Our comprehensive research into recycling and sustainability solutions highlights the importance of selecting the perfect collaborator to convert our innovative concepts into practical, meaningful outcomes. In this respect, Cyclyx and its consortium members offer an unparalleled synergy, and we look forward to a fruitful partnership.”

By becoming a part of Cyclyx’s network of circular-minded enterprises, AstroTurf is better positioned to advance its mission of delivering environmentally responsible, low-maintenance, and economically viable alternatives to natural grass. The collaboration with Cyclyx enables sustainable methodologies across AstroTurf’s manufacturing, installation, and end-of-life procedures. It opens the door to divert over 10 million pounds of PE waste destined for landfills towards circular recycling routes, with up to 90% of this waste potentially being repurposed.

“Cyclyx’s deep expertise in handling post-use plastics will significantly bolster AstroTurf’s ability to meet its ambitious sustainability objectives,” says Ron Sherga, Vice President, Membership Engagement of Cyclyx. “AstroTurf is a beloved brand in the world of sports, and together we will ensure it’s recognized not only for its high-quality products but also for its commitment to environmental preservation.”
