AstroTurf Anchors the New Shipyard Park

Charleston, SC – The Charleston area will soon have a brand new destination baseball complex, and every one of the playing surfaces will feature AstroTurf®. Construction is already underway at Shipyard Park with plans to open the venue in 2017. Each of the five baseball fields and the indoor training facility will be surfaced with cutting edge, baseball-specific synthetic turf from AstroTurf.

The two full-size, professional fields and the three youth baseball fields will all be covered by two distinct artificial turf systems from AstroTurf. The Diamond Series 3D3 covers the outfield and infield “grass” portions of the field, and it is comprised of a unique combination of high micron monofilament fibers for structural integrity, slit film fibers for durability, and the patented RootZone fibers for infill consistency. The Diamond Series 3Di is a proprietary fiber blend with shorter pile height that accurately emulates the look and feel of clay. The 3Di turf is used for base paths, warning tracks, batter’s box and pitching mound. All of the elements of the playing surface have been engineered for optimal ball bounce, underfoot feel, playability, and durability.

“We feel that AstroTurf is far and away the most advanced turf technology for baseball available in the market today,” said Stan Kowalaski, Director of Shipyard Park. “These fields are going to look great, play great, be easy to maintain and give us less down time when weather hits.”

Sports Construction Management, a certified AstroTurf distributor, will handle installation of the 400,000 square feet of artificial turf. Shipyard Park is located on the banks of the Wando River north of Charleston. It aims to serve the youth baseball needs of the community with high quality baseball diamonds and a top-notch training facility, as well as attracting regional and national tournaments to the Charleston area.

AstroTurf’s next generation baseball surfaces have grown increasingly popular with America’s Pastime. In fact, since 2009 more Division I baseball programs have chosen AstroTurf than all other synthetic turf brands combined. These fields combine the look, feel, and performance of a traditional grass and clay diamond while requiring far less maintenance. In addition, the advanced drainage systems and durable surfacing allow teams to play and practice in difficult weather conditions. AstroTurf synthetic turf baseball surfaces can be found all over North America, from the Blue Jays’ Rogers Centre in Toronto to Hawkins Field, home of the 2014 College World Series Champion Vanderbilt Commodores.
