Spokane, WA – Gonzaga is well known for the athletic success its basketball team showcases every March, but its competitive spirit goes well beyond scholarship sports. The school’s many intramural and club sport athletes were in for a treat when they reconvened for the school year, as Mulligan Field received a major face lift this summer with new synthetic turf from AstroTurf®.
Gonzaga’s primary recreational field was resurfaced with over 125,000 sq ft of AstroTurf’s RootZone 3D3 Blend turf system. This premium multipurpose sports turf combines slit film and monofilament fibers for optimum durability and structural integrity. It also features AstroTurf’s patented RootZone sub-layer, a crimped fiber that stabilizes the infill while improving overall field performance. The result is an aesthetically pleasing synthetic turf field engineered to stand up to heavy usage while maintaining optimal playability.
“Mulligan field is used by our students for general recreation, intramurals, club sports, and classes, so the durability and playability of the surface was very important in making our decision. For the amount of use the field gets, Astroturf was the right choice for us,” Rob Kavon Assistant Director of Athletics for Facilities and Event Operations said.
Coast-to-Coast Turf, a certified AstroTurf distributor, removed the old artificial turf and put in the new AstroTurf athletic field. Installation was completed on July 15th.
Mulligan Field is the home of GU Intramurals, Club Sports, outdoor Physical Education classes and general recreation. The venue accommodates soccer, rugby, lacrosse, ultimate Frisbee, flag football and other sports, and it has high-powered lights so the action can continue well into the evenings.
