Winston-Salem, NC— AstroTurf®, originators of the synthetic turf industry, will be resurfacing the field hockey pitch at Wake Forest University this spring. The state-of-the-art synthetic turf field from AstroTurf will ensure an optimal playing surface when Wake Forest Field Hockey hosts both the ACC / Big Ten Challenge and the ACC Championship in 2016.
The new pitch at Kentner Stadium will be the AstroTurf 90 product, which combines the traditional knitted nylon top cloth with a 3/8th inch Armacell pad. AstroTurf fields have long been regarded as the unequivocal standard for field hockey performance and are the favorite among coaches and players alike for their playability, durability and low maintenance requirements. The knitted nylon surface is unique to AstroTurf and preferred because it provides tight tolerances, non-directional play and a uniform surface. It’s no wonder AstroTurf is recognized as the Official Artificial Surface Provider of both USA Field Hockey and the National Field Hockey Coaches Association.
“On behalf of the Wake Forest Athletic Department, Field Hockey is proud to announce AstroTurf as the official turf supplier of our world class facility at Kentner Stadium,” said Jennifer Averill, Head Field Hockey Coach. “AstroTurf continues to be recognized as a leader in our sport for playability. Hosting both the ACC / Big Ten Challenge and ACC Championship is a distinguished way to showcase our new state of the art facility and those who maintain it.”
Coach Averill will be heading into her 25th season at the helm for the Demon Deacons. Inducted into the National Field Hockey Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2010, Averill has led Wake Forest to three national championships, five conference championships, and fifteen NCAA Tournament appearances.
Installation of the new pitch is slated for spring and will be a joint project of Sports Construction Management and AstroTurf. The new surface will replace an AstroTurf field that was installed in 2004 and lasted well beyond the industry standard of eight years.
