Youngstown, OH – The YSU Softball Complex will have a new look when the Penguins take the field this spring. Cutting edge artificial grass from AstroTurf® was installed in November as part of a renovation project for the facility.
The Youngstown State softball team will now play on an outfield featuring AstroTurf’s RootZone Diamond Blend synthetic turf system. This premium product seamlessly integrates three different synthetic fibers into one high-performance playing surface. Like all of AstroTurf’s Diamond Series offerings, the RootZone Diamond Blend is engineered to replicate the look and feel of natural grass, with specific attention paid to ball-bounce and underfoot feel. The outfield surface even features a “Y” logo in centerfield and alternating panels to give it that artistically mowed look.
“Our team got a chance to test out the new field after it was installed and the reviews were all positive,” said Head Coach Brian Campbell. “AstroTurf has far and away the best reputation for softball and baseball artificial turf, and they did not disappoint. We’re really excited for the upcoming season and our new home field advantage.”
In addition to the new AstroTurf sports turf in the outfield, the YSU Softball Complex received updated bullpens, more accessible seating, a new retaining wall, and a pedestrian walkway. PSS Contractors handled the site work, including excavation of the old grass turf and drainage construction. AstroTurf’s in-house crew performed the turf installation. This project reflects Youngstown State’s ongoing efforts to grow its athletic footprint and economically revitalize the surrounding areas. The home opener for Youngstown State is scheduled for March 23rd against IUPUI.
