Boston, MA – The much-anticipated 2018 season is underway, but the Boston College baseball team has one more premiere event in store. The Eagles host their home opener on March 13 and when they do, they’ll christen a brand new stadium that features a state-of-the-art baseball field from AstroTurf®.
The athletic turf that will cover the new baseball park on the Brighton campus will be AstroTurf’s Diamond Series synthetic turf system. The Diamond Series combines decades of research and experience with the latest technological innovations into a field that emulates the look and feel of a natural surface. The artificial grass is specifically designed to replicate the ball-bounce and underfoot feel of natural grass while the specialized turf in the base paths produces the same traction and sliding distances you’d find on clay. All told, the Diamond Series delivers the high-end performance of a traditional surface but with less maintenance requirements, better durability, and much better drainage.
“The home opener is a big deal because it gives our students, alumni, and fans the opportunity to come see the new ballpark and to get excited about this team we’re so proud of,” said Head Coach Mike Gambino. “Obviously the playing surface is a big deal for our players, and I think we got it right by going with AstroTurf. They have a tremendous reputation for excellence in the college baseball community.”
Around Brighton and Chestnut Hill, that reputation goes beyond baseball. Right next to the new baseball field, the newly constructed softball field was recently furnished with artificial grass from AstroTurf’s Diamond Series for the outfield. Additionally, the field house currently under construction next to Alumni Stadium will have a full football field installed by AstroTurf in May in anticipation of a grand opening this summer. And of course Alumni Stadium itself was resurfaced with a cutting edge AstroTurf field last summer. In fact, the athletic administration is so confident in AstroTurf that they’ve been dubbed the Exclusive Synthetic Turf Provider of Boston College.
The Eagles’ home opener on March 13 is against Holy Cross with first pitch scheduled for 3pm. Coach Gambino is in his eighth season at the helm, and BC is looking to build on back-to-back trips to the ACC Championship, including a 2016 run to the NCAA Super Regionals.
