Norwalk, CA – Two institutions whose names were born from the space race of yesteryear are teaming up for a project taking aim on the near future. AstroTurf® has been chosen to provide the sports surfacing for a transformational renovation of John Glenn High School’s athletic facilities. The iconic turf manufacturers will provide new artificial turf for six new fields at the school named for the celebrated astronaut.
Plans call for the construction of a brand new, on-campus football stadium along with a practice field, two new baseball fields, and two new softball fields. The football field will be encircled by a new track surface and will accommodate track and field, soccer and lacrosse. Each of the six new athletic fields will be surfaced with cutting edge synthetic turf from AstroTurf.
The new football stadium and the adjacent practice field will both receive AstroTurf RootZone 3D3 Blend synthetic turf systems. This premium turf product utilizes a proprietary blend of fibers and includes AstroTurf’s patented RootZone sub-layer. The RootZone 3D3 Blend delivers top end performance, long lasting durability, and game day good looks. The baseball and softball fields will be surfaced with artificial turf from AstroTurf’s Diamond Series line. Turf from the Diamond Series is scientifically engineered to replicate the look, feel, and function of its natural surface counterparts, including the ball bounce on grass and the slide distance on clay.
“We are thrilled to be chosen the synthetic turf and track provider for John Glenn High School,” said David DiGeronimo, AstroTurf Director of Regional Operations. “Our team is very excited to provide the La Mirada Unified School District with the very best products and construction experience possible.”
Once the officials from NLMUSD made their decision, they were able to proceed quickly thanks to AstroTurf’s affiliation with National IPA. National IPA is the nation’s leading cooperative purchasing organization. They offer a portfolio of competitively solicited contracts that have been awarded based on industry best practices and maximum value. It saves institutions like NLMUSD time and money by eliminating the administrative costs and hassles of running competitive solicitations on their own.
Installation of the new turf fields will fall to AFE Sports, AstroTurf’s west coast partners in turf construction. They will also be tasked with putting in the new track, a Rekortan G10 system from AstroTurf’s sister company APT. The G10 is a full pour system that features APT’s green layer, meaning that 70% of the track is renewable polyurethane. Installation of all of these athletic surfaces is scheduled for the summer.
