Westfield, IN – A one-of-a-kind athletic complex is teaming up with the one-and-only. Grand Park Sports Campus, a new and impressive recreational athletic village situated just north of Indianapolis, has tabbed AstroTurf® to install eighteen synthetic turf baseball and softball diamonds. Work on the project began in November with completion scheduled for April.
Grand Park opened in 2014 and boasts 31 multipurpose fields and 26 baseball/softball fields. Although the venue is owned by the City of Westfield, the baseball side of Grand Park is managed by Bullpen Tournaments. They enlisted AstroTurf’s help to replace the infield portions of eighteen of the natural surface diamonds with artificial turf.
“Although we wanted to maintain natural grass outfields for those eighteen fields, we soon realized that traditional surfaces have limitations when it comes to inclement weather and heavy usage,” said Blake Hibler, Director of Operations for Bullpen Tournaments. “AstroTurf has become the gold standard for baseball turf, and we are excited to bring them in to replace our infields with their state-of-the-art synthetic turf. We are thrilled to invest in the future of Grand Park and the City of Westfield and continuing the vision of making Grand Park Sports Complex a world-class facility. No other complex in the country will have 26 synthetic diamonds, creating a destination where baseball truly matters.”
The new infield surfaces at Grand Park will come from AstroTurf’s Diamond Series line of baseball and softball turf. Propelled by decades of research and development, the Diamond Series lineup is engineered to replicate the look, feel, and playability of both the grass and clay portions of the diamond all while delivering the benefits that natural surfaces lack – durability and drainage. Twelve baseball diamonds will be fitted with a Diamond Series infield that combines artificial grass with a specialized turf to emulate clay base paths. Six softball fields will receive Diamond Series softball turf to match the skinned infield play of the softball diamond.
“We are very excited to install our top of the line Diamond Series at one of the best facilities in the country,” said Aaron Klotz, AstroTurf’s Director of Baseball Operations. “Grand Park hosts some of the top players in the country during the spring and summer months, and now they’ll be playing on the best surfaces around.”
Grand Park hosted the Little League Midwest Regional this summer as well the Big Ten men’s and women’s soccer tournaments this fall. It will host the Amateur Baseball Championships for all ages next year, as well as several USSSA regional tournaments. The incredible 400-acre park is also the official home of the Indianapolis Colts Training Camp. The place is so massive that you could fit the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, the Indianapolis Zoo, and Lucas Oil Stadium inside of it and still have plenty of room to spare.
