Southfield, MI, September 19, 2016 – Lawrence Technological University is in the midst of a major athletic facility upgrade, and they’re starting from the ground up. LTU Athletic Field now features a cutting edge playing surface from AstroTurf®, the originators of the synthetic turf industry. Installation of the artificial turf field, located on a part of campus known as the Point, was completed in mid-August and opened for competition last week.
The new field has been lined for use by football, soccer and lacrosse, and it features over 88,000 square feet of the AstroTurf 3DX synthetic turf system. The 3DX product is composed of slit film fibers for maximum durability, sand and rubber infill, and AstroTurf’s patented RootZone® technology. The RootZone utilizes texturized fibers to stabilize the infill and increase shock absorbency, improving the field’s safety and playability. The result is a high performance athletic surface that can handle heavy usage.
“This AstroTurf field is the first phase of many improvements to our athletics facilities,” said LTU Athletic Director Scott Trudeau. “Many of our students will be impacted by the addition of this multipurpose field on our campus. We will have three soccer teams and two lacrosse teams immediately benefit from not having to travel for games and practices. We will also be able to utilize it for our many intramural programs like flag football, soccer, and ultimate frisbee not to mention the numerous teams that will utilize it for conditioning purposes. It is great to see how far we have come since 2011 when we got into the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics.”
The new and improved LTU Athletic Field was officially inaugurated when men’s soccer hosted Taylor University in the team’s home opener on August 24th, a 1-0 win for LTU. To date the Men’s and Women’s teams are both undefeated at home. The Blue Devils compete in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference of the NAIA. AstroTurf was selected as the official synthetic turf of the NAIA back in March, with NAIA President Jim Carr citing the company’s innovative products, commitment to excellence and their safe and durable fields.
The new field is part of a more comprehensive renovation project aimed at improving the athletic facilities on that part of campus known as “The Point.” Phase 1 includes the new turf, fencing and increased parking capacity. Phases 2 and 3 will include adding lights for nighttime activities, permanent stands and other spectator amenities.
